Geological Sciences at UNC integrates the study of Earth’s physical, chemical, and biological systems. Thus, they encompass many of the pressing issues facing humankind in the 21st century, including energy resources, the water supply, climate change and its effects, mined and quarried materials upon which modern society depends, and natural hazards such as Earthquakes, landslides, volcanoes, and floods. Geology is by nature interdisciplinary, incorporating physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics, computer science, and other disciplines. Geology students are by necessity broadly trained and intellectually versatile.
